Ah, the first day of summer has come and gone. And on the first day of summer, I repeatedly heard, "Well, It's summer so there's nothing I can do about getting in shape. Too many bbq's and outings.", SAY WHAT NOW? Really? That's not a fact, that's a choice. Your choice.

Here's the deal, its all about better than choices. I know people who are going to lose weight, and some who have already conceded. The people who want to...will, the people who put food before their health, fitness and self esteem won't. Sounds harsh, but it's true. Why has food become such a determining factor in our lives that we just CAN'T put other things first? I believe the answer is that it's easier if we feel it's out of our control...but it's not. These are all your choices. Eat a burger, heaping mound of macaroni salad, every beer or glass of wine is only going to get to our mouths by our own hand. It's an act of consciousness.

In essence, we make the decision if we are overweight, and unfit. We have decided its better to put fork to mouth than to put weight in hand, or legs on treadmill. Or to sit, and drive than to walk and exercise.

I've explained interval training to everyone already, but I'll explain it again so you get the idea of what I'm going to talk about...I think you'll like this one.

Interval training is when you find your target heart rate (low and high heart rate for maximum fat burning), and then you run, jog, wog or walk to bring your heart rate up and down. Start low, then go to the top of your range, then take a little while to come down, then back up. It burns more calories than regular walking, biking or running. You're cardio is done in INTERVALS of low to high and high to low.

Our lives are pretty much the same. Our jobs, relationships, finances, They go up, they come down...not always bad down, but they do seem to run in cycles, or Intervals. The status of jobs over the years change as well. Most of these things involve other people and our own determination or drive. They simply aren't always in our control...are they? (This is where you say, Yes, Mark :) )

Our weight loss, and/or fitness though, is controlled by us. There are few cases where someone can't do some form of exercise, or can't lose weight...but the majority of us can. We control that. We shouldn't be running an interval race with our fitness and weight loss goals. Ups and downs. We all have a healthy weight and body fat range. The only way you go out of that is by actually doing it yourself.

The good news is, you also have the control over how you increase your fitness and weight loss successes. It's simpler than you think. "DO SOMETHING FITNESS WISE EVERYDAY, AND IN 30 DAYS, YOU'LL BE 30X FITTER THAN YOU WERE A MONTH AGO!"

If you're overweight or unfit, there's a good possibility you have knee, back, and/or ankle problems. Excess weight puts a strain on your body, and those are the joints, so imagine what it's doing inside of you right now. Are you coming up to Type II Diabetes? Heart problems? High Cholesterol, Osteoporosis, or any other wide range of health problems that will plague you because basically, you chose food and not exercising over simply doing something each day.

Now, lets take it a step further. Did you know that better fitness and lower weight increase mental acuity? Better Self Esteem? Better Sleep? More Energy? These things lead to better relationships, better jobs or pay increases, less stress at home and in the workplace, and an overall sense of well being?

My point is, in this daily rat race that we are in that in some ways, makes decisions for us, why would we not want to be more in control of the things we can be? Why wouldn't we want to make those knee, back and shoulder pains go away, or have better self esteem, have more energy and feel so good? Why wouldn't we want our significant other to look at us like they haven't possibly in years or be able to run the kids around without a thought...even better, or to get them involved in some sort of fitness program.

Now put these two on an imaginary scale in your head.
On one side - FOOD - Overweight, unfit, tired, joint problems, health risks, exhaustion from simple things or just a normal day

On the other side - EXERCISE - Fitness, Higher Self Esteem, Better Sleep, More Energy, Healthier Life, Better Relationships.

See, now it's in your hands. Which way will your scale tip? Its as simple to start as Putting down the bread or bagel or whatever your favorite is, and picking up a piece of fruit, nuts, veggies, and a wide variety of good tasting foods that you probably just forgot how good they are.
