Well, it's the first day of school for kids,
teachers, mom's and dads, and college
students. This day came quickly, not sure
where it all went, but it's here...I hope
went smoothly for everyone.
Someone came in the other day asking about
training. He was reading a book about
staying young at 75. He's changed his diet
to simpler foods and smaller portions with
more meals during the day and he's lost
10lbs in the past few months. He walks,
keeping his heart rate up, and feels pretty
good.
The reason he came in was to ask about
strength training. He said the book he was
reading indicated it's a key element to
maintaining youthfulness.
He's absolutely right! After the age of 30,
you can lose up to 5 lbs of lean tissue
every 10 years. Which means, if you weighed
170 lbs at age 30, and weigh 170 at age 50
without strength training during those
years, you'll probably have lost 10% of your
lean tissue...That's a wopping 17lbs of lean
tissue.
That means you've gained 17lbs of fat. The
odds are, your weight went up....so you can
see how these numbers mount and increase as
you age.
Strength training with cardio and proper
diet is the fountain of youth. It really is.
When you maintain lower body fat and higher
lean tissue, you have maintained your
strength. Strength training in your 30's,
40's, 50's and beyond is critical in keeping
fit and staying youthful...here are some
examples of what it does for you, and why
you should do it.
- Reduce
or eliminate Osteoporosis.
- Be able
to play sports well into your 70's
- GREATLY
Reduce the risk of injuries from falls,
car accidents, etc.
- Enhance
your life by increasing your endurance,
flexibility and agility
- Increase
your overall energy levels.
- Reduce
the potential for mental issues such as
depression, anxiety and even Alzheimer's
- General
sense of well being and the ability to
enjoy life
- Maintain
and increase your Functional abilities
such as climbing stairs, walking down
the street, picking up kids and
grandkids, household chores.
- Increase
your cardio vascular conditioning for a
stronger heart and healthier lungs
These are
just a few of the positive effects of
strength training. It's not something we
should start when we get older, we need to
do it now so we can enjoy our lives as we
age...as we age in years anyway...we don't
need to age that quickly in our appearance
and our physical states.
There's nothing better than talking to
someone who asks you your age and when you
tell them they don't believe it! Appearance
is also a big plus...its motivating, gives
us better self esteem and also has something
to do with how others perceive us. I don't
think that's a great reason to strength
train, but I do believe it is a fact and
needs to be taken into consideration.
I'll tell you what! I want to be bouncing
off the walls (in a good way), into my
latter years! I want to play with the kids,
throw a ball, run down the block, not be
injured if I fall or get in an accident, and
I don't want to have a hard time doing
simple things like getting up and down off
the couch. I see too many people who are in
their 30's and 40's who are already feeling
the effects of age. I guess we all do to
some extent, but why make it worse or why
not try and stave off BEING OLD! I'm not
giving in that easily...and it's worth
making the time to do. It will give you MORE
time later!
Brain function is increased when we workout.
We're sharper, can retain information
better, and gives us the edge as we get
older in finding new jobs or careers. It's
true. Your brain gets more oxygen there by
increasing your mental ability and warding
off mental illnesses and disease.
I recommend it for everyone of any age. The
benefits of strength training for as little
as 30 minutes 3 days a week will
exponentially increase your feeling of well
being, confidence, energy levels and also
your strength. Sometimes strength to the
average person is over rated...but how can
you say getting on with life and feeling
great doing it, and doing it with ease is
over rated? Don't be caught on the couch
wheezing as you go to get up and make the "Aaaaakkkk"
sound as you do. :)
Come down to Fitness By the Bay. Fit in at
least 30 mins, 3 days a week and find out
exactly what you've been missing. My clients
are constantly coming in with stories of
what they were able to do that they could
never do before, or how it's changed their
lives (and their pants size :) )
Whether you come here or not...always
remember, be efficient with your time, do it
safely and don't let anyone push you till
your hurt. That's not how I train here. I
train everyone as an individual so they get
whats best for them...not for EVERYONE!
