Hi all!! Been kicking butt here at Fitness By the Bay. Everyone's working hard and it's showing.

I want to talk about bad relationships, good relationships and break ups today. No, not with your significant other, but with food and exercise. But they are a lot like personal relationships...and the habits we get into, and how we focus on the wrong things sometimes.

Food has become this all consuming entity that we think about all day. "Hmmmm...whats for dinner, where are we going, I'm gonna get the _____".

American's, even in a recession are eating out 3 - 5 times a week. They don't have time to exercise, or money for training, but they spend in excess of $150 to $300 per week eating out. They eat out, eat the wrong foods, WAY too much of it, and they can't stop themselves. Like when you've dated someone you just can't get enough of.

The break up can be devastating in both cases. But they can both be beneficial to our futures, sanity and lifestyles. Bad food, may taste good, but it doesn't help you survive. Food in general is for survival and life. But bad food, lots of food, they kill you. They really do. The health care system is overloaded with diseases associated with being overweight, obese and improper eating and fitness habits.

I get people who say the following, "But I'm not going to give up my food, my wine, my snack, my particular type of food". Then you're not going to lose weight. They'll also say, "Well, I'm not going to stop living", or "I need to have some fun."

So eating poorly, too much, and not exercising is LIVING? It's FUN? Hmmm...how fun is it when you're on medication or you're restricted from doing certain things because of your habits? When you can't breathe after climbing a flight of stairs, or can't get into your car without sighing, or your knees hurt from excessive weight? Yeah, that's fun!! Our actions have consequences. It's simple. Want to be happy and healthy? Eat Right and Exercise. What to continue visiting the doctor, feeling like you're always tired and feel depressed? Then keep eating all the wrong things and be sedentary. You'll have a great new relationship....with your doctors and nurses.

If you want to lose weight, yeah, it takes work. It's changing a habit that's been going on too long...but the benefits of changing those bad relationships will give back to you exponentially. You're going to feel the best you have in years! You're going to look as good or better than you ever have.

Here are some examples of things you can be more aware of to show you what I'm talking about.

"I don't have time to make meals."
How long does it take to run out during lunch or for dinner? Add that up, and tell me how much time it took. You don't have to cook restaurant quality food every night. But get in the habit of cooking, making quick healthy meals (the internet is full of ideas). That new habit will become easier, and you'll save some time as well.

"I don't have time to exercise, or even go for a walk"
During lunch, bring your meal and your snacks. When you don't have to run out, or order in, you'll have time to actually do something other than run around getting food, and eating food.

"I don't have money to personal train"
Save every receipt that you have for eating out for month. I'll be you'll not only have money to train, join a gym or go to classes, but you'll a bunch of money left over too if you stop eating out.

"It's a holiday, or I was at the game and all they had was"
You know you're going. Eat before you go. Bring something, but don't allow it to sabotage any good things you've been doing. If you want it, you'll do it...there's always a way, NO EXCUSE!

"I'm not giving up food or wine I like"
I hear this one a lot. Life is full of trade offs. Like a relationship with a person, there are things you like, and things you don't. Raise your hand if you've ever been in a relationship with someone that you loved certain things about, but the most important things to you, you sort of put to the side for it, and eventually, you realized you needed those important things more than the stuff you put them aside for. How much time did you waste in that bad relationship? How unhealthy was it? How many times did you think to yourself that you knew you had to do something about it, but it was too hard to do something about it, so you ignored it? That's food!! Eating poorly now, is a bad relationship. It's unhealthy, and those tastes and cravings make it hard to stop...but you know it's not good for you. Do you make excuses for it? Do you say next week? Do you say, well it's only THIS that I eat that's no good? How many excuses and reasons do you come up with that keep you filling your plate or going back for more?

Just remember, being unfit, unhealthy and eating poorly is your choice. It's a tough choice to change it, but you know it needs to be. You're the only one that will do it. When you eat poorly, so does your significant other, and your kids if you have any.

Don't let a bad FOOD relationship ruin your life, or affect those around you as well. Think of it as a clean break up!

Once you've gone through the break up, suddenly the whole world looks different and full of opportunities, like exercising, getting into smaller clothes, being more energetic, being stronger, being a positive influence on others. It all starts with putting down that bad food, and picking up a good habit to replace it.

I'm looking forward to everyone of you being in a healthy food relationship, not making excuses, or using food and wine as a crutch to HAVE FUN or for you to feel ALIVE and GOOD! Replace it with a healthier lifestyle (no, you don't have to be a fanatic about it). Your whole life from today will change. Your future will be healthier with less illness or chance of illness. You'll look back with a feeling of accomplishment, and you'll truly have been a success by not continuing that bad relationship.

What relationship will you be in? Come down to Fitness By the Bay and let me know. :)
