Hi Everyone! How are things? Hope you and your families are doing well. I hope you're all looking forward to spring coming, I know I am! But we can talk about the weather when you come down, but right now, I want to talk about something that I had a conversation with a few of my clients about last week.
Yo Yo weight loss and diets. So, when you diet and your weight Yo Yo's, what's actually happening? (hence the title of today's newsletter).
When you diet alone, or do it with cardio alone, you can lose weight. No doubt about it. But do you ever notice that when you break the diet, just a weekend can push your weight right back up again! And that weight has to be dieted and run off again. It's a vicious cycle. The answer is actually quite simple. You didn't add lean tissue, and reduce your body fat by just dieting and doing some cardio. So when you eat wrong a few days, or weeks, your body goes right back to were it was. You never CHANGED your body type.
Here's an example of what happens A man weighs 200lbs. He's say, 30% body fat. That's 60lbs of body fat, and 140lbs of lean tissue.
He diets and loses 30lbs, goes to 170lbs His body fat is still 30% (he didn't lose body fat by dieting, he just lost weight). His body fat at 170lbs is now 51lbs His lean tissue is only 119lbs!
WOW!! So he only lost 9lbs of fat, but lost 21lbs of lean tissue!
He goes off his diet. He goes back to 200lbs....but his body fat will most likely increase as well. He could very well be 35% or higher body fat!
That's the Yo Yo! Now you see what's happenin!
Look, we're not all looking to be body builders, weight lifters, competitors, but we are looking to lose weight and get in shape, and hey, showing muscle isn't so bad either. But we don't want to go through endless Yo Yoing right? Wouldn't you like your work to mean something and change your body so it starts to take care of itself?
When you resistance train with your diet and cardio, amazing things happen. I had a client who went from 149lbs, to 119lbs. Her body fat went from 33% to 22% in 9 months or less. I actually asked her to make sure she was eating. Muscle needs more calories to survive than fat...good calories mind you. She said, "Mark, you don't understand, I do eat. I eat just about anything I want and I don't gain any weight. I may have a bad weekend, and gain 2lbs, but by Tuesday, it's gone."
What happened is, her body started taking care of itself. That muscle needs calories. Have a bad weekend? Get back on track on Monday and that weight will slip away much quicker. It doesn't give anyone license to go bizerk, but the occasional bad day or two isn't going to kill you.
Men, women, and children benefit equally. Women can lose just as much and add just as much lean tissue (without the bulky muscle like a man).
It's all about change folks. Change is an amazing thing. Change your habits, change your priorities a bit and you'll literally change your lives. I see it everyday with comments and smiles that say, "Hey, I put on a pair of pants I haven't fit into in 2, 3, 4 years!" or "I can't believe how strong I am. I can lift my kids and walk up the stairs, or do my job so much better."...and then I have them! Bwaaa hahahaha (add your own evil laugh here).
I'm not a crazed trainer, I'm a trainer that knows the benefits of proper exercise and I'm a trainer that loves what this does for people. I'm a trainer that is saddened by the recent study that said that 75% of the population will be overweight or obese by the year 2015 and who takes a personal interest in his clients goals and lives.
But, the one thing I do know for sure is, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU, or the people that you know, can lose weight, can get in shape and can feel the best you ever have. You can if you do it. If you are patient, and consistent. If you don't stop at the first sign of a bad day or week. This is for life, but it doesn't have to be your life...it has to simply be a part of your life. No more Yo Yoing with JUST dieting and/or cardio!
There are no excuses. I train moms with 2, 3, 4 kids. I train men and women who work in Manhattan but find a day on the weekend and one or two nights to get in here and train and watch what they eat. I train people who were true foodies, but changed their priorities and lost 20 - 50lbs and 10 or more percent body fat. I train people who just like to train and enjoy it with a friend or two. Don't have the time? Make the time! It's there if you want it. Maybe you do it at home, a friends home, a gym, or training at Fitness By the Bay. But find the time.
Come in, get a free fitness analysis. If you can do it in the mornings, you'll get a discount on monthly prepaid sessions or 10, 15 and 20 session packages. But sometimes you just need some direction and a good start. I'd love to see you and talk to you about how we can get you started.
Refer someone that gets 2 or more sessions a week, and get a free session each month they sign up for training ,or a free membership to the gym.
Remember, couples, friends, brothers and sisters, everyone can come in and do it together as well. But do it...here, on your own, somewhere else (just kidding, don't do it somewhere else, I was just being nice), but do it! Stop the Yo Yo.
