Hi all! Hope you're all getting some exercise. September is one of the biggest months for starting or restarting workout regiments, and I hope you're starting already or getting ready to start. I've had the best summer here to date. Most of my clients stayed through the whole thing, and new ones came in. The summer is tough, so congrats to all of you who stuck it out and came closer to your goals with every sweaty workout!
Now, I'm a little mad. I looked up weight predictions for 2020, and 2030. First of all, it's not that it's soooooooooo far away. Sounds like it, but its not when you consider that the people effected by this will be some of us who will be middle aged, in our later years, and most importantly, this group will include our kids and grandkids as well.
Why am I mad? Well, because first I think you should look at these stats that I found...then tell me you're not mad, or you're not ready to get out there and really get going and doing something about your weight or fitness level.
2010 - 68% of us are overweight, 34% are obese. - The average American TODAY eats out 3-5 times a week. (could be any meal) - But only 13% exercise regularly, and less are actually doing it right and in shape. - 90 - 95% of Type II Diabetes patients could have prevented it.
2015 - 75% of the the U.S. will be overweight...41% will be obese.
2020 - 80% of us and our kids and grandkids will be overweight, and 50% will be obese. - 1 in 6 dollars spent on health care will be for conditions and diseases caused by weight issues. - More people will die of weight related illnesses than those that smoke.
2030 - over 86% and some say most people will be overweight or obese. - We didn't teach our kids how to eat and exercise, and they didn't have the tools to teach their kids. They are the ones in this group.
The BMI scale is the best way to determine if you're weight is right on. Too many say it's bogus...not scientists, but average people. They say it's not realistic. So, all the science out there, the history of people in general is wrong? The BMI is accurate, but if you have more lean tissue...and only in my opinion, weighing a bit more is ok...but a few pounds...not much more.
Did you know that Serving Sizes were determined in the late 70's and early 80's by conducting food consumption surveys with American's? There hasn't been a survey since or change in serving sizes...and for good reason. If they did it later, a serving size would certainly ensure we'd all be overweight...so pay attention to serving sizes. They're important.
In this day and age, we need to actually set aside time to exercise. It's just the way it is. We also need to stop eating out so much, and start eating proper portions.
We need to start teaching our kids that fitness is important and eating habits will affect them and their kids for life! And the best way to teach is by example. I have a grandmother and granddaughter that workout together. The grandmother said she wants to get her in the habit of exercising now. She sees how weight can affect people as she works in a cardio vascular office and see's that most of the cases are people who have not taken care of themselves. She doesn't want that for her granddaughter and will do whatever she has to, to instill good habits in this little girl. She's doing a great job! She's 10, and can't wait to come in 3 times a week for 30 minutes each time.
It's so understandable how this all happened. In the 80's, we had more disposable income, more food choices, more bad food choices, everyone in the household works, etc. But we know better now right? (Man, those 80's really were a disaster...Flock of Seagulls, Crazy hair cuts, Bad Music, The K Car and more..lol)
Two things I want everyone to stop doing!!
1. Stop comparing yourself to others who are heavier or more out of shape than you. If you're thin, that doesn't mean your healthy or fit. You can be "Skinny Fat" (light weight, high body fat). As we get heavier, the comparison goes up, and up and what originally made us feel better, literally could kill us.
2. Stop thinking if you can't get the weight off in a month, it's not worth it!! I have a client who knows that if she loses 1 - 2 lbs per week, by the end of the year, she'll have met or exceeded her goal. She knows that now is the toughest part, but also knows that as time goes on, and her body becomes more lean, the pounds will come off easier. She gets it! This isn't something you do and then stop because you didn't reach your goal overnight. If you stick with it, it works. It takes us years in most instances to gain the weight, we need to give ourselves the time to get it off, and get it off right.
Cardio and/or Diet alone will not work. If you go off your diet and workouts, you'll gain that weight right back and you're body wouldn't have really changed. Add in weight training to add lean tissue so your metabolism changes and those calories burn up at rest.
Here's the deal everyone!
If you do it, it works. Teach your kids about it's importance! If you don't do it, it's not going to work. And your kids won't benefit.
If you compare yourself to someone, compare yourself to someone in better shape and who is lighter and even lean and mean.
Don't worry about how fast or slow the opposite sex gains or loses weight. Worry about what you want to be, how you're going to start, and keeping on track!
Food helps us live. Don't live for food and eating out.
The beginning is the hardest The results are amazing and mind boggling.
A girl at the deli I go to here was 250lbs. She is now about 140. I have to ask her how long it took her, but she was determined. This young lady is gorgeous. She looks fantastic, has tons of energy and she did it all by proper diet, cardio and weight training. She's an inspiration. I almost fell on the floor when she showed me the pictures of herself! Now she wants to body build!
That can be you! That can be anyone! That can be everyone!!
Come in and start now! We all need motivation and want to learn how to exercise and what to do...that's what stops many people...so come in and get that motivation and learn how to do it right!
Start NOW! Im waiting for you. Do it with friends or family and save money. Just not eating out will save you more than you can imagine!
